You can find out more about Eve Montelibano here. “The Story of My Life” by Eve Montelibano is a memoir that explores the author's life through her eyes, with stories about her family, friends, lovers, friendships and relationships. The book contains chapters on how she has survived against all odds; overcoming an abusive father who beat his wife; becoming a 20-year old mother to two babies at the age of 14; attending college at 15 with one baby in tow; moving away from home to attend college in New York City as a sophomore and finding success as a student journalist at Columbia University. Montelibano weaves her personal experiences with those of her mother and grandmother, and her friends, lovers and children. She discusses the importance of female friendships and how they have affected her life. She begins the book with her birth story. She was born prematurely on December 12, 1962, after two years of pregnancy. She talks about abuse by men throughout the book, from the first boyfriend who abused and stole from her to a current husband who overlooked infidelities by his ex-wife. The author begins with three different accounts of how she survived an abusive father, one when she was in high school, one when she moved away to attend college and one at the end of the book. She talks about how no matter what kind of abuse her father came up against, he always came out on top. The first chapter also contains a chapter on smoking and alcohol addiction from a young age to late teen years. In the first chapter, Montelibano writes about a high school boyfriend who misused her for drugs or money. He was abusive and often beat her up for chewing Pop Rocks or biting into spare change to make change. She also writes about dating and self-doubt. She felt unattractive and alone. The second chapter of the book is about her move out of her father’s family home at the age of 14 to attend boarding school in Connecticut. She described her time as "an awkward life transition, already an adult, but also a young girl trying to be an adult." She talks about the first boyfriend she had there who raped and beat her badly one night on his porch after she returned from a club with him. She felt so trapped and isolated that she considered suicide several times during this time. This chapter also talks about another boyfriend who would break up with her, so she would break up with him first. The third chapter in her book "The Story of My Life" partly addresses an abusive marriage. Her husband would often beat her up and berate her for even minor infractions, such as not making his favorite snack. She writes about ways that she could escape the situation, but never did. Montelibano talks about travels, leaving New York City to attend college in California with one baby in tow. She describes feeling lost and alone at the school she moved to, but felt very comfortable with the women around her. However, sometimes she got passed over for a piece of paper because another girl was willing to work harder to get it. cfa1e77820
